The Paulding County Patriots football team struggled throughout this season but were led throughout the campaign by junior defensive lineman Brandon Ballard. The three-year starter had numerous standout performances this year, consistently providing stability to the defensive line and making key plays for the Patriots.

“Brandon is an excellent player who’s also very strong academically,” head coach Scott Hamilton said. “He’s one of the best defensive linemen in our region.”

Paulding County won only two games this season but had positive moments.

“We stuck together defensively though the hard times,” Ballard said. “We need to get mentally ready for next season. We’ll work hard in the weight room and keep at it.”

Ballard attributes natural growth and training to his evolution as a lineman.

“I was smaller as a freshman and was quick but not as fast as needed,” he said. “I’ve improved by getting bigger and faster while maturing through gaining experience and watching film. I’ve also learned to stay low to the ground when attacking.”

Ballard has also had a successful prep career at Paulding County on the track team throwing the shot put and on the wrestling team, qualifying for the state championships last year in the 285-pound class and finished in the top 16. He’s a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and plans to continue playing multiple sports in college while majoring in accounting.
