Chapel Hill junior Darby Demarest has had one of the most active and successful fall seasons for any Douglas County prep athlete.

Through her stellar pitching, the Panthers’ softball team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs after winning Region 4-AAA regular season title. Demarest has also had a strong year on the cross country circuit, placing first in the region meet on Nov. 2 with a time of 22:56.43, more than 10 seconds ahead of the next competitor. The Panthers also won the team competition at the meet as well.

“It was exciting to cross the finish line first and receive the first-place medal,” Demarest said.

She concluded her cross country season last Saturday, placing 39th in the state meet in Class AAA.

This was Demarest’s second season participating in the two sports during the same season.

“My normal day in the fall consists of going to softball practice, changing at home and running on my own,” Demarest said. “It can be difficult at times but I’m used to it and good at managing time.”

Off the field, Demarest is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and National Arts Honor Society. She plans to major in biology upon entering college.
