Matt Munns was in no hurry at the beginning of the Class AAA boys’ race at the state cross country championships in Carrollton.

But, using a conservative strategy, the Blessed Trinity senior worked his way up the pack and came away with a runner-up individual finish to lead the Titans to a fourth-place showing in the AAA team standings at the state meet Nov. 9.

In 20th place after one mile, Munns began to make his move and was up to second place by the two-mile mark – where he passed the third, fourth and fifth place runners and opened up a gap of about 10 seconds on his closest challenger.

At the end, Munns crossed the finish line with a time of 16 minutes, 39.21 seconds to earn his runner-up position.

For Blessed Trinity coach Greg Johnson, Munn’s state meet performance was the culmination of a season full of hard work.

“Matt is a hard worker and he has been training for the state meet ever since [the track and field] season ended in early May,” Johnson said. “Matt is one of the most driven and hard-working individuals you will ever meet. Every practice and every race was used for a single purpose – to run his best at the state meet.”
