After a recount in Alpharetta’s Post 1 City Council race was conducted, it has been concluded that incumbent Donald Mitchell is the winner.

Mitchell received 1,079 votes, with opponent Doug DeRito receiving 1,072 votes.

“I am happy to be a member of this council that truly seeks the good of the community and moving it forward. I can rest my head at night with the knowledge that I truly ran a clean campaign,” Mitchell said. “I did not resort to slander or half truths to make my opponent look bad. I did not support any letters based on falsehoods and I was proud to put my name on everything I sent out from my campaign. To be perfectly truthful, I am glad to have this campaign over and be onto business. I have had about enough politics to last a lifetime. Now I can get on with the real reason I ran for office to begin with, to help move Alpharetta forward. This is a great city with great people and I am sincerely proud to be a part of it.”

Georgia law governing elections says that when the difference in the number of votes between candidates is less than 1 percent of the total votes cast, a recount may be requested by the losing candidate.

“I lost by seven votes, but am thankful for all the support I did receive. I called and congratulated Donald Mitchell on his win. He was not present at the recount. I wished him and our city the very best,” DeRito said last Wednesday following the Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections recount.
