Personal customer contact keys small business success

When asked the slogan of Sewell Printing Services, a member of the Douglas Country Chamber of Commerce, account manager of the 22-employee firm, Charles Turner, pulled out his Bible.

He turned to Matthew 7:12 which reads, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you for this sums up the law and the prophets.”

Last Saturday was set aside as Small Business Saturday to highlight the valuable position smaller businesses occupy in the workforce.

Turner, a Douglas County native who has been an account manager with the Douglasville office of Sewell Printing Services for seven years, said that although the personal touch customers usually achieve with smaller business companies is a valuable asset, it is when problems arise that the value of this close partnership shines.

“What separates us from the big, multi-lateral companies is usually not only how we can add a more personal touch and streamline the process of meeting the needs of our customers, but how quickly we can respond when something unforeseen happens,” Turner said.

He compared his quick customer response time to the large “big box” companies where customer inquiries or problems are usually passed to any number of people and, many times, one ends up speaking to an electronic answering machine, hoping that individual would return the customer’s call quickly.

“My customers know me and know how to reach me,” Turner said.

“In dealing with a smaller company, especially one as progressive and customer- oriented as we are, our customers have a much better feeling that their business transactions with us will be done to their satisfaction,” he said.

Turner also believes being with a smaller company allows him more time to assist non-profit groups, such as Camp Twin Lakes and the Shepherd Spinal Center, with their printing needs.
