One of Shembari Phillips’ goals for this season was to be a more aggressive player. Against Tri-Cities last Saturday, the Tucker junior scored 12 of his 18 points in the final quarter of a 73-64 win during the Morrow Thanksgiving Tournament.

Phillips, who is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, broke down his defender and finished strong at the rim as he pulled away in the fourth quarter after three periods of tight competition.

“I was just getting to the hole,” Phillips said. “The lane was wide open so I just took what they gave me.”

“He is supposed to give us that every night,” Tucker basketball coach James Hartry said. “He was a little slow coming out of the box but that is what we expect from Shembari.”

Until Phillips made his impression on the game, senior Jon Dunmyer, who had 10 points in the fourth, was key throughout and finished with a team-high 27 points.

“Shembari is coachable and a special kid,” Hartry said. “We couldn’t do it without him and Jon. They are our every night guys.”

Phillips said he is being recruited by Ole Miss, Tennessee, Appalachian State, South Alabama, Texas A&M and other schools.

“A lot of schools throughout the country think he can play,” Hartry said. “We think he can play and he’s a special talent.”
