Union Grove senior Jay Shorts scored only four of his 17 points in the fourth quarter against Ola on Nov. 26 but the 6-foot-3 forward made all the right plays in the 54-44 win.

With the Wolverines needing baskets to remain ahead of the Mustangs in the fourth quarter, Shorts drew the defense on a pair of plays to setup Rod Dunlap, who finished with 13 points, for easy scores. Shorts also made a steal and found Caleb Ham for a layup on a fast break in the final period.

“I was just attacking, collapsing the defense and finding the open person,” Shorts said.

“Jay is a very good basketball player,” Union Grove basketball coach Russ Atkins said. “He’s got good vision. He’s a good shooter and has great offensive skills but he can pass the ball for a big guy.”

Since Shorts is one the team’s tallest players, he has to make the sacrifice of playing in the paint but is more than capable of playing on the perimeter and expects to do so in college.

“Jay has improved to the point where in some situations we’re going to play him on the perimeter,” Atkins said. “Obviously, he has to play post for us because of who we have but his versatility will be huge for us down the stretch.”

Shorts is looking forward to the games against teams from Clayton County.
