The city of Sandy Springs is preparing for the holidays and is inviting area merchants into the fold.

The city’s Sparkle Sandy Springs season has shifted to the Sparkle Sandy Springs holiday décor contest, whereby local business owners are invited to display their seasonal spirit in a competition of decor and lights.

The competition is open to all businesses within the city limits of Sandy Springs.

According to organizers, the goal is to foster a positive community spirit and light up the holiday season around Sandy Springs. Each firm has the freedom to choose a holiday theme as the basis of their decor and express themselves for the enjoyment of their customers and the community.

Businesses wishing to compete must complete the registration form, which can be accessed online.

All participating businesses will be judged on the decorated fronts of their locales visible from the street. The featured décor should represent the holiday spirit of Sandy Springs and be expressed in an inviting and festive way for all consumers and visitors to the community. It is not intended to be promotional in nature, but rather a celebration of the season.

Judging for Sparkle Sandy Springs will take place over a two-day period: Tuesday and Dec. 11. Participating businesses are requested to turn on their lights at 5:30 p.m. on those days and keep them on until midnight. Judging criteria for Sparkle Sandy Springs includes Creativity and Originality, Best Expression of Theme, Best Use of Lighting, Best Use of Available Space and overall Design Quality and Presentation.

The winning storefront will be announced during the Dec. 17 Sandy Springs City Council meeting.

Information, guidelines and registration are available at www.sandyspringsga.gov/sparkle.

Last month’s photography contest kicked off the Sparkle Sandy Springs season.

Residents were given the opportunity to submit images — of city events, historic locations, nature landmarks or its people — for this year’s Sandy Springs holiday card.
