This patio party, at Lucky’s Burger & Brew in Roswell, is for canines and their companions and is a different kind of holiday celebration.
Benefitting the Atlanta Humane Society, on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Lucky’s outdoor covered patio is open for doggie treats, special beverage and food deals for humans, and pet photos with Santa for a $5 suggested minimum donation to benefit the homeless pet nonprofit.
What makes this year’s Santa Paws party even more interesting is a Toys for Tots fundraiser that pits intrepid volunteers from the Roswell police and fire departments against each other in one of Lucky’s legendary eating contests.
Two officers from each department will attempt to eat an entire Grim Reaper burger, a four-pound all-beef patty, a pound of bacon, half dozen fried eggs, order of onion rings, stacked and layered in a specially-made bun with chili cheese Tater Tots on the side, in one hour.
The contest will be judged by District 21 State Sen. Brandon Beach, R-Alpharetta. For entry to this spectacle, guests are asked to bring an unwrapped new toy for Toys for Tots.
This will be a formidable challenge for the first responders, but a little indigestion will be worth it if people donate to Toys for Tots, said police Capt. Ken McRae, who said he volunteered for the contest to help kids.
“Unfortunately there are children out there in bad situations, so I’m glad to give my time to make a difference,” he said.
“As for my appetite, well let’s just say I’m known to be an eater. I’m not shy around food. I have not actually seen the burger, but I’ve heard it will give me a run for it. I’m just going to bring my appetite and hope for the best.”
Firefighter Jason Wozniak also cited helping Toys for Tots as his reason for participating, but added he loves the idea of everyone coming together for a friendly police vs. fire contest.
“I have not seen the burger but I have heard about it,” Wozniak said. “Even though I am not a professional eater, I have participated in a few eating contests in the past, so I kind of know what I am getting in to.
“I don’t know if we will be able to finish it by I think we will be able to give the police a run for their money.”
Lucky’s executive chef and general manger Ted Lescher said he had thought of doing the First Responders Grim Reaper Challenge a while back, but was not sure when they would be able to stage it.
“So, this year we decided to ask the fire and police departments if they would like to help us do a little more to help the community and Toys for Tots by participating. Thankfully, both departments agreed to join the friendly and maybe a little messy competition,” Lescher said. “Remember, it’s all about the kids,” McRae said. “And it doesn’t hurt to go head to head with the fire department, either.”
Lucky’s Burger & Brew is at 1144 Alpharetta Street in Roswell.
