Michelle Wexler, a second-grade teacher at Mimosa Elementary School, died Dec. 6 after battling uterine sarcoma for several months.

The 28-year-old, who was named teacher of the year at the school in February, was diagnosed with the rare form of cancer in June.

On her school blog, Principal Lynn Johnson said, “Michelle always wanted to be the best teacher, the best daughter, the best teammate and so on. She worried about more than she could ever control. Over time, Michelle came to trust herself and her instructional practices and the decisions she made. Someone asked me, in their grief, what we were supposed to learn from her early death. I certainly don’t have the answer for that — it is personal to each of you — even those who never knew her.”

She continued, “She was one of the few people who told me truth … good and bad. So, what I know about the person who gave her all to this school, is that she made me a better leader and a better person. I know Michelle will be missed by family, friends, students, staff … but, I also know that Michelle left this world giving all she could to her family and profession … and she will be remembered for it.”

In lieu of flowers, Wexler’s family is encouraging contributions to the American Cancer Society in her honor or to Michelle’s Keep on Swimming fund at www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/54w2/michelle-s-just-keep-swimming-fund.
