Local runners named to all-metro cross country team

A number of local standouts were among the runners who were selected to the Atlanta Track Club’s 2013 All-Metro Cross Country team, which was announced at a ceremony at Westminster last week.

Westminster’s Jordan Flowers and Graham Huff, Marist’s Daniel Navarro and Michael Thurston, St. Pius X’s Austin Sprague and Galloway’s Reilly Friedman were named to the boys’ team.

Marist’s Morgan Ilse, Westminster’s Charlotte Folinus, Atlanta International’s Helen Audrey Williams and Pace’s Julie Ross were the area athletes chosen for the girls’ squad.

Westminster coach Joe Tribble and assistant Geoffrey Sudderth and the coaching staffs from Marist (Eric Heintz, Kevin Lisle, Dougie Coffed) and St. Pius (Ryan McClay, Mike Demerest) were among the All-Metro boys’ team coaches honored.

Pace coaches Jolie Cunningham and Steve Cunningham were among the All-Metro girls’ team coaches, along with Westminster’s Amy Eubanks, Anna Major, Miranda Wilson and Kim Blodgett and Marist’s Heintz, Lisle and Coffed.

Heintz also won the Paul Koshewa Award for Outstanding Dedication, while Tribble was inducted into the Georgia High School Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame.

Local standouts named to All-Metro hoops team

A number of local standouts were selected to the Atlanta Tipoff Club All-Metro boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, which were released last Thursday.

St. Pius X players Asia Durr and Jasmine Carter were named to the girls’ team, along with Holy Innocents’ player Lexi Cassell and Lovett’s Te’Erica Eason.

St. Pius’ Nick Harris was the lone area player selected for the boys’ team.

HSP football players tabbed for GFC team

A couple of Holy Spirit Prep football players — sophomore offensive lineman/linebacker Drew Vincent and junior running back Conner Whelan — were selected to the Glory For Christ’s All-Star team, which was released last Wednesday.

Vincent and Whelan were among the 53 players selected to play in the GFC league, which features small Christian schools and teams consisting of home-schooled players from across the metro Atlanta area as well as Augusta.

Sandy Springs camps

The city of Sandy Springs is offering gymnastics and SporTots camps for the holidays as well as a youth wrestling program at North Springs High School for ages seven through 14

Cost: $25 per child for the wrestling program, which includes a uniform T-shirt.
