Miller Grove sophomore Alterique Gilbert definitely has the Wolverines covered when it comes to shooting from beyond the arc.

In his first seven games of the season, Gilbert shot 22-of-38 (58 percent) from the 3-point line. During that stretch, his most impressive outing was against Luella on Nov. 30 when he made 6-of-8 attempts en route to 34 points and a 66-55 win.

“I scored 34 but my team won the game and that is really what matters,” Gilbert said.

The 5-foot-11 guard has also been just as dependent from the free-throw line in the first seven games, netting 83 percent of his attempts.

Gilbert also averaged five assists and four steals, which proves his focus is just not on one end of the floor.

“On defense, we are looking to put pressure on people,” Gilbert said. “Pressure that they can’t handle.”

“Alterique has exceeded any type of expectations we might have had for him from day one,” Miller Grove basketball coach Sharman White said. “He is very humble and hungry and wants to make the big play. As he gets better, we get better.”

This week, Gilbert and the Wolverines, who are currently 9-2, will compete in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach.

“It’s not a field trip,” White said. “It’s a business trip. We’re going to see where we are with some of the top teams from around the country.”
