Charlie Ingram was a steady presence defensively for Lovett during its drive to the Class AA state football championship.

The 6-foot-1, 186-pound senior middle linebacker had a team-high six tackles to help lead the Lions to a 14-7 victory over Lamar County in the title game at the Georgia Dome Dec. 14 and had five tackles in their 35-12 semifinal win over Brooks County Dec. 6.

Ingram accumulated 111.5 tackles (99 unassisted, 25 assists), six sacks, one forced fumble and one interception to lead a Lovett defensive unit that allowed an average of 14 points a game this season.

“He has anchored that [defensive] unit this year,” Lovett coach Mike Muschamp said. “The team selected him as a permanent captain throughout the summer and camp. He led us in tackles this year. He is so instinctive. He becomes a coach on the field for our defense and he has a firm grasp of everything we are trying to do.

“That was never more evident than in the last two games of the season against Brooks County and Lamar County. Both teams averaged 40 points a game and our defense — led by Charlie — held them to 12 and 7, respectively.”
