The same holds true for community improvement projects which need a “driving force” to make them successful.
As far as the new Douglasville Conference Center is concerned, that driving force is its director of conference center operations, Jennifer Bean.
Next month marks the one-year anniversary of the conference center. Although the center, which opened Jan. 18, is fast becoming Douglas County’s meeting and conference headquarters, it has also proven to be well adapted as a social venue as a number of local social events, and even wedding receptions, have been held there.
Bean said she makes sure the ambiance of the 37,000-square-foot structure is fresh and inviting for any function.
“The message I and my outstanding staff emphasize about this facility is that we offer an appropriate setting for residents and visitors alike to gather for just about any type event,” she said.
Although the facility offers no overnight stay accommodations, its impact on area hotels and motels has been impressive.
“Since the facility opened, our hotel-motel tax revenue has jumped 6 percent,” Bean said. “This means the conference center is helping put heads on beds in our hotels and motels.”
Her job responsibilities not only include sales and marketing for the conference center but making sure meeting and conference rooms which have been booked are set up properly, including any needed special equipment.
“You have only one chance to make a positive first impression,” Bean said. “It is part of my job to see this first impression on our clients is such a memorable one that they want to return here time and again for their events.”
Bean arrives at the conference center around 8 a.m. daily and, depending on what events are scheduled or if she has appointments concerning future functions, her work days can stretch well into the evening.
With the conference center averaging 30 to 40 events monthly, Bean is accustomed to long work days.
Although she enjoys hearing praise for the center from conference or business meeting officials, she also enjoys special local events held there, especially wedding receptions.
“Although we have already hosted numerous wedding receptions, the Douglasville Conference Center has the distinction of hosting another type of wedding-related event that not too many other centers of this kind can claim,” she said. “We have hosted actual wedding ceremonies here.”
She is always emphasizing the convenience of the conference center for almost any function.
“I believe we have done well in getting that message out,” she said.
“We want people to know they don’t have to go to Atlanta to find such a facility because there is one right here in their own back yard,” Bean said.
