Southwest DeKalb junior Davion Wingate had some impressive steals and rebounds against Forest Park last Friday but those statistics could not compare to her biggest contribution.

With less than 20 seconds remaining in the game, Casey Kelly made a steal and passed the ball ahead to Wingate, who converted the game-winning layup in a thrilling 55-53 road victory against Forest Park.

“It was a good pass so I couldn’t blow my teammates assist,” said Wingate, who finished with eight points.

“Davion made some mistakes but she also made up for them,” Southwest DeKalb girls’ basketball coach Kathy Walton said.

Junior Tynice Martin, who pulled the Lady Panthers even with a short jumper before Wingate’s basket, led all scorers with 25 points.

“Tynice is a great player,” Wingate said. “She rebounds, can put the ball on the floor and makes good passes.”

Wingate also finished with six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

“She’s very athletic,” Walton said.

“I hate to lose so I just got to do what it takes to win,” Wingate said.

Wingate’s ability to be so versatile on the floor may also stem from her father, David Wingate, who played four seasons at Georgetown and 15 in the NBA.

“I learned defense from my father,” she said. “He was a great defensive player.”

Wingate, who also runs track, would really like to play basketball for the Maryland Lady Terrapins.
