The departure of graduated seniors Elijah Edgeworth, John Nelson, Benjamin Watson and Brett Benson have hurt the Raiders this season as the squad has garnered one win though Jan. 6. The victory came in a 61-43 win over Southeast Whitfield on Nov. 27 at a tournament in Dalton.
“While our record might not be indicative of a good season, I’m very proud of the players and how hard they compete, practice and play each night,” Raiders’ head coach Robert Benson said. “We’ve continued to practice hard.”
East Paulding has received solid contributions from seniors Alex Pack, Benji Hasanhodzic and junior DaQuane Trice this season. The Raiders are seeking their first winning record since the 2011-12 season when they won 14 contests, including eight region victories, and finished near the top half of the region standings.
This year, East Paulding has played a difficult schedule which includes tough opponents such as New Manchester which made the quarterfinals of the state playoffs last season, and Villa Rica, both of which share the same region as the Raiders. The squad also has faced stronger competition from teams within the county such as North Paulding, which already has amassed the most wins the program has ever had in a single season, and South Paulding, owners of a school-record 10-game winning streak through Jan. 6.
East Paulding will return to action this weekend with home contests against region foe Rome on Friday and Class 6A opponent Marietta on Saturday.
