Columbia girls’ basketball coach Carla Hollaway’s halftime message didn’t result in a win against Redan last Friday but it saved the Lady Eagles from embarrassment.

Down 22 points at the half, Columbia erased that deficit just past the halfway point of the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on to the momentum in a 75-74 shortcoming to the Lady Raiders.

Yaktavia Hickson scored 37 points and fellow senior Shamyiah Smith added 14 points.

To counter that, Brea Elmore scored 23 points and fellow seniors Jamese Abney and Destini McClary both added 17 for Redan.

With two quarters in the books and the Lady Eagles trailing 46-24, Hickson said her coach posed more questions than demands.

“She asked did we want to win and did we believe that we could come back,” said Hickson, who committed to play basketball at Tennessee Tech next year. “That set the whole standard for the rest of the game.”

As a result, Columbia scored the first eight points in the third quarter and before the end of the frame was within single digits.

“I just wanted to win and I think everybody wanted to win so we knew the only way to win was taking one possession at a time,” Hickson said. “Once we started playing more as a team and getting defensive stops, we started getting back in the game.”

Then with plenty of time left in the fourth quarter, Hickson scored eight straight points to reduce the margin to 62-56. Malisha Harris capped the 14-0 run with a three-point play to even the score at 62-62 with 3:31 remaining.

But Elmore, who will be attending Memphis next year, responded with a layup and a 3-pointer from the corner to rebuild Redan’s lead. Then McClary and Abney added shots from deep to highlight the Lady Raiders’ game-sealing run.

“We played together as a team and everybody played hard,” Elmore said.
