Last Friday’s contest against Columbia may have been Brea Elmore’s toughest game to play in her young career. But the senior didn’t show any signs of it.

Elmore scored 23 points to help the Lady Raiders slide by Columbia for a 75-74 home victory and improve to 14-0 overall.

“Brea had some misfortune in her family where her grandmother passed,” Redan girls’ coach Jerry Jackson said. “She stayed here just to play in the game so that means more to us than her playing through a leg injury because she really wasn’t supposed to be here.”

The injury Jackson is referring to was nothing more than a bruised thigh Elmore suffered when colliding with Columbia’s Shamyiah Smith in the fourth quarter.

“I loved my grandmother to death,” Elmore said. “I just played this game for her.”

In the first half, Elmore displayed her ability to shoot from the perimeter as Redan built a 22-point lead at the half.

“We just practice those shots all the time and when we get the opportunity in the game we knock them down,” she said.

Then in the fourth quarter when Columbia pulled even at 62-62, Elmore scored seven of the team’s final 13 points to secure the win.

“When you watch film Brea barely makes mistakes,” Jackson said. “She is pretty much getting close to being a great ball player here at Redan.”
