Deborah Sullivan met her husband, Robert, at a square dance club in the Chicago area. As much as they both enjoyed square dancing, however, marriage, work and raising a family soon took precedence in their lives.

Now the Roswell couple has renewed that early interest. “We have been married for 30 years and we’re getting to be empty nesters,” Deborah Sullivan said.

Vice presidents of the square dance club Dudes ‘n’ Darlins, the Sullivans want to encourage others to join them.

“We have found square dancing to be a quite enjoyable way to exercise as well as to meet new people,” she said.

Learning how to allemande left and promenade, as well as other basic steps, isn’t terribly difficult, Sullivan said.

“It keeps your brain active because you have to follow what the caller calls. The steps make a geometric pattern, and it’s very pleasing and satisfying when you know how to follow through.”

On Jan. 16, 23 and 30, the club is holding introductory classes for new dancers at Crosspointe Community Church, 77 Crossville Road in Roswell. Classes meet from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. Singles, couples and families are welcome. Cost is $6 per person per class. Caller Randy Ramsey will give both verbal direction and a guided walkthrough for the different positions.

Dudes ‘n’ Darlins also holds bi-monthly club dances in east Cobb.

Many of the club members are north Fulton residents, Sullivan said.

Dudes ‘n’ Darlins members will be available to help and demonstrate. And there will be plenty of practice dancing to square dance music.

“There’s a lot of positive reinforcement and encouragement,” Sullivan said.
