Naima Jackson had 16 points and six steals, Nuba Jackson scored 10 points and Erykah Davenport added nine and 12 steals as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 61-39 home victory in Region 6-AAAAA competition.
Due to their No. 1 ranking at the time, the Lady Tigers didn’t take long to separate themselves from the Lady Wolverines thanks to 13-0 run in the first quarter.
To highlight the surge, Davenport made a steal and found Jackson for a layup. Then Tori Robinson stole the inbounds and nailed a 3-pointer from the corner. Davenport followed that with another steal en route to a layup and Jemilla Flanagan added a jumper.
Finally, Davenport nailed a jumper to cap the burst for a 19-8 advantage. From thereon, Tucker continued to benefit from its full-court pressure, which caused more turnovers and led to easy baskets, and stretch the margin to double digits and keep it there.
Imani Richardson scored 10 points and Chrystal Ezechukwu finished with nine and 16 rebounds for Miller Grove.
Unfortunately in the highly-anticipated nightcap between two top-10 teams, the Tucker boys’ team couldn’t feed off this momentum, falling 70-60 to the Wolverines.
Tyrell Thomas scored 16 points and Shembari Phillips added 11 but the impact of Keith Pinckney and Alterique Gilbert on both ends of the floor was the difference.
“We really played well defensively,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White said. “I was proud of the way we stepped up. We’ve been focusing on defense and made a couple of adjustments on some things and it really paid off.”
Pinckney had 20 points and five steals and Gilbert filled the stat sheet with 19 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds for Miller Grove, which pulled ahead in the first quarter and comfortably maintained the lead until the final buzzer.
"They have a great symmetry playing with each other," White said. "They just feed off each other and make it so the job is much easier for our other guys. It is just a pleasure to have two lead guards back there."
