PodPonics grows into the future

Atlanta-based PodPonics, a high-tech organic salad-mix provider, announced last week its local expansion and global projects with a seasoned management team and increased farming capabilities.

The 4-year-old company recently closed $1.4 million in bridge financing, allowing the business to quadruple the size of its south Fulton farm in 2014 and implement farming systems abroad to communities in need.

“The goal of PodPonics has always been to improve local communities through sustainable urban farming technology,” Matt Liotta, company founder and CEO, said in a statement. “With our expanded team, increased farming capabilities and generous investment, we will now be able to supply the local community and beyond with a quality consumer product and reduced environmental imprint.”

The company recently expanded its team and now has 31 employees, including new additions to the senior management team: J. Connor Seabrook, vice president of finance and administration, Dana Gerle Clemens, vice president of operations, and Gerard Gunthert, vice president of infrastructure and real estate. Atlanta City Councilwoman Joyce M. Sheperd, whose district includes part of south Fulton, said the venture is significant.

“The city of Atlanta is honored to be home to a leader in the hydroponics industry that is led by a team of individuals who are pushing farming and sustainability practices forward,” she said in a statement. “As PodPonics grows into the future, our community will be strengthened by its presence and nourished by its sustainable, fresh produce.”

With a strategic team of industry experts and leaders, along with the promise of expanded farming capabilities in south Fulton, the company can now operate on a global scale.

Its second farm is under construction in Dubai and subsequent farms are expected in other countries in the Middle East and southeast Asia.The company anticipates additional Atlanta grocers in their distribution plan for 2014 and continued growth of globally based farming efforts.

The company uses a proprietary system that integrates advanced hydroponics — growing plants in water, not soil — proprietary lighting, irrigation and nutrient technology with process control. Its growing system eliminates pesticides, reduces cost, improves product quality and creates local jobs.

The benefits of the approach include providing a healthy, natural product grown in a controlled environment at or near the point of consumption.
