(UPDATED AT 9:42 A.M. WITH CORRECT DATE FOR PARTY)

In keeping with its Oriental origins, the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta in Buckhead will host a Chinese New Year celebration Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to honor the Chinese lunar calendar and usher in the Year of the Horse.

Guests have a chance to win a grand prize trip to Hong Kong including two business-class tickets from New York or Chicago on Cathay Pacific Airways and a three-night stay with breakfast at Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong.

The festivities include a lion performance, traditional Chinese calligraphy, live music and festive delicacies. The hotel will be adorned with authentic red and gold lanterns, ornate candles and other traditional Chinese decorations.

For the Chinese, this celebration is the most important of the year symbolizing the Earth’s new beginning. The Chinese culture utilizes a lunar calendar based on the moon’s cycle to create its zodiac signs and 12 animals to represent the 12 signs of the Chinese horoscope. The spirit of the horse is recognized to be the Chinese people's ethos – making constant efforts to improve themselves. It is energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able.

The Mandarin Oriental culinary team will prepare an array of specialties including Peking duck carved to order with scallion pancakes and Hoisin sauce, roasted suckling pig with sweet and sour sauce, marinated beef tenderloin, steamed ginger-crusted red snapper, vegetable lo mein and an assortment of dumpling selections.

To add to the excitement, a live horse from the nearby Chastain Horse Park will greet guests upon arrival to the hotel. A portion of all event ticket sales will benefit the Chastain Horse Park therapeutic and outreach programs, which work with inner-city and at-risk children in developing and strengthening awareness, focus and coordination skills.

True to tradition, rousing lion dance performances will capture the spirit of the season – it is said to bring good luck to households and the businesses they visit. All guests will receive a red packet filled with wishes of good health and good fortune.

The cost for the event is $55 per person, plus tax and gratuity and includes premium open bar and complimentary valet parking. The Mandarin Oriental is located at 3376 Peachtree Road.
