Pickett's Mill battlefield to host book signing, tour, living history event

Upcoming events at Pickett’s Mill Battlefield Historic Site include:

- Lecture, book signing and tour with Brad Butkovich Saturday at 10 a.m. Brad Butkovich, author of “Pickett’s Mill: Along the Dead-Line,” will discuss the basics of Civil War research, followed by a book signing and guided interpretive tour. Cost is $2 and $4. Event is handicapped accessible.

- The Civil War History of Camp McDonald presented by Michael Shaffer Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Experience a special lecture from Michael K. Shaffer, assistant director of Kennesaw State University’s Civil War Center. Hear the story of Big Shanty serving as the home of Camp McDonald, the largest Civil War training camp in Georgia. This camp witnessed more than 13,000 soldiers practicing the art of war between 1861and 1863. Cost is $2 and $4.

- Cabin Life at Pickett’s Mill April 12. The historic site’s log cabin is the meeting place for this living history event. Discover what life was like on a small farm during the Civil War 150 years ago. Watch people cooking over a fire. Enjoy toys and games. Experience the sights and sounds of a black powder demonstration as authentic style muzzle loading rifles and muskets are fired. Cost is $2 and $4.

- 150th Commemoration of the Battle of Pickett’s Mill May 31.

Watch real-time troop movements, infantry and artillery firing demonstrations, and see what life was like on the line. See how civilians survived as the Civil War came to Pickett’s Mill. Cost is $2 and $4.
