Senior Treva Hickey scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 57-51 victory over Mundy’s Mill on Monday.
Koi Kizzie scored 13 points and fellow senior Deonna Williams had team highs of nine rebounds and five assists in the contest, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 28.
“Our seniors went out there and [a] couple of them who don’t usually start got to start and they produced,” Union Grove coach Dock Gammage said. “It was one of those things that you want but you are never really sure what is going to happen when you put a different mix on the court.”
From the start, the Lady Wolverines were handling the Lady Tigers’ pressure well and connecting on most of their open shots.
The first quarter ended well also when Williams nailed a jumper at the buzzer for a 17-10 lead.
With Hickey, the team’s leading scorer, in foul trouble, Mundy’s Mill managed to pull within three at the half.
But Hickey would register 10 points in the third and help rebuild the margin to double digits with one quarter remaining.
“She played huge in the second half,” Gammage said. “That hurt us not having her in there but that also made other people step up.”
In the final frame, the Lady Tigers would get as close as four with 1:35 left, but Union Grove would sink enough free throws to seal the victory and avenge a 56-55 shortcoming on Jan. 10.
With the victory, Union Grove improved to 4-10 in sub-region 4A-AAAAA. In their final home game, all five senior players scored at least one basket.
“I can’t say enough about those seniors,” Gammage said. “Hopefully we will get a little bit of momentum going into the region tournament. Maybe get a break here or there and go to state.”
The Lady Wolverines will need to win two tournament games to qualify for the Class AAAAA playoffs. The region tournament begins Saturday at Whitewater and then shifts to McIntosh High.
