EDITOR:

Editor’s note: This letter was originally addressed to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

I want to thank you for restoring the funding and the 40-hour work week to the four Fulton County multipurpose centers. This will allow the centers to continue to serve the senior citizens of Fulton County by helping to maintain them physically, mentally and socially.

The only remaining problem is the Dial A Ride Transit System (DARTS), which enables senior citizens who cannot drive for various reasons or who don’t live convenient to public transportation to maintain an active lifestyle.

It has been reported DARTS has had its prior year funding restored and it too is now able to provide a 40-hour work week to its employees.

However, I continue to hear many complaints [that] the system has made cuts in the services it provides. If a driver does not show up for work, then the entire route is cancelled even if there are necessary doctor visits for that day. In addition they are now scheduling no trips for after 2:30 p.m. where their previous cutoff was 4 p.m. This prevents many of these seniors from taking afternoon classes at the four centers.

They tell us the plan is to supplement the DARTS system with MARTA Mobility in the future. The problem with this is MARTA requires reservation weeks in advance and these seniors cannot predict when they may need to visit their doctors and even to predict what their schedule will be like weeks in advance.

I am requesting you fix this one remaining problem in the services you offer seniors.
