While Westminster wasn’t able to successfully defend its Class A-AAAAA girls’ swimming team championship, the Wildcats still got a state title from Katie Christy.

The junior won the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 3.31 seconds and finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.50 – placing a close second to Pope’s Emma Murray (1:04.36) – to help Westminster to a third-place finish in the A-AAAAA team standings.

It was the second consecutive state title in the 200 IM for Christy, who won the event last year with a time of 2:04.40. She also won the state crown in the 100 breaststroke as a freshman in 2012.

Christy also helped Westminster finish second in both the girls’ 200 medley relay with Maddie Downs, Emily Bassett and Taylor Penn (1:48.01) behind Marist (1:47.13) and the girls’ 400 freestyle relay with Downs, Bassett and Isabella Issa (3:33.34) behind Woodward (3:29.33).

“She’s one of our leaders,” Westminster coach Pete Higgins said. “She has a good rapport with the underclassmen and also the seniors on top of her. She has a lot of versatility and we can use her in a lot of different ways.”
