Gunnar Bentz finished his outstanding high school swimming career with two more state championships — and two state records to boot.

The St. Pius X senior and Georgia signee won both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly to help lead the Golden Lions to the Class A-AAAAA boys’ team title at the state swimming and diving meet at Georgia Tech Feb. 8.

Bentz won the 200 IM with a time of 1 minute, 45.55 seconds, breaking the previous state mark of 1:47.86 set in 2002 by former Parkview swimmer Eric Shanteau, who would go on to swim in both the 2008 and ’12 Summer Olympics.

He also won the 100 fly with a time of 47.26 seconds, surpassing the old record of 48.16 set by Lassiter’s Jimmy Yoder in 2013.

Bentz finishes his high school career with five state titles — having also won the 200 free (1:38.65) and 500 free (4:35.36) in A-AAAAA last year and the 100 breaststroke (56.80 seconds) in A-AAAA as a freshman in 2011.

“Gunnar is one of the most outstanding athletes to have come through Pius and he has contributed greatly to our team and the overall community,” St. Pius X swimming coach Scott Carter said. “His swims at state were some of the most memorable we’ve seen and the records he’s set both at the state level and at Pius will take quite an effort to break.”
