Injuries curtailed Nikki Cwalina’s high school basketball career during her first three years at Roswell.

The 6-foot-1 senior center seems to be making up for lost time in her final prep season, however.

Cwalina, who tore the same ACL the last three years in a row, has come back strong – ranking second on the team in scoring with 11.7 points a game and leading the squad in rebounding with 9.9 per contest.

She has been a crucial figure in Roswell’s turnaround, helping lead the Lady Hornets to a runner-up finish in the Region 5AAAAAA tournament and a spot in the Class AAAAAA girls’ state playoffs finishing 3-23 last year.

“Nikki is a player who has gone through so much adversity with three ACL tears and still managed to come back stronger than before,” Roswell coach Lisa Kennedy said. “Her competitive spirit has helped our team exceed expectations this season, going from last in the region a year ago to playing for a championship this season.

“She is a leader on our team and pushes her teammates to be as driven as she is. She successfully defended every other post player in our region this year and was an offensive force that caused problems for many of our region opponents. We will miss her strong presence in the post next year and her tenacity when it comes to overcoming obstacles and being driven to succeed.”
