The bacon-themed race will hit the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton on March 22 and Media Coordinator Stephanie Schell said the event is “expected to draw in thousands of hungry runners.”
“This is our first year in Atlanta and we’re excited to see the turnout,” she said. Runners will have a choice between a standard 5K distance or a quick .05K stroll with bacon snacks along the way.
“The event will start at 8 a.m. for a festival that includes music and activities to warm up before the race,” Schell said.
The racers will take off at 10 a.m. and be greeted at the finish line with unlimited bacon.
All participants will also receive a bacon-design T-shirt, a race “bib” and, for runners 21 and up, a Bloody Mary.
Bacon-enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join in the .05K, but runners must be at least 8 years old to participate in the 5K. Unlike many race events in the area, the chase will not be timed and there will not be prizes or medals for the fastest runners.
Proceeds from the race will go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., a research hospital that caters to preventing and treating pediatric diseases.
“When participants register, they are encouraged to sign up as a St. Jude Hero and fundraise for the cause,” Schell said.
Participants who raise money before the race for the hospital will receive pig prizes and St. Jude merchandise.
Race Director Lauren Shield said the real star of the race, though, is “America’s favorite snack.”
