DeKalb residents can make strides for education during Vanderlyn Elementary School’s sixth annual VanderDash 5K and fun run.

The event, with a 5K starting at 7:30 a.m. and the one-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. on the school’s campus, is one of the Parent Teacher Association’s largest fundraisers of the year.

“VanderDash consistently generates more than 1,000 participants and raises more than $15,000, with all of the profits directly benefiting students,” said Leslie Frohman, co-chair of the race.

The event started five years ago as a way to get parents and students involved in raising money for the school in a fun, active way.

“The primary purpose of this race is to build community spirit,” said Julia LeDoyen, the association’s co-president. “The organization this event requires is tremendous, and we rely on the time and abilities of volunteers to pull it off.”

She said the support and sponsorships from residents and local businesses goes a long way to help the students.

“Last year VanderDash had amazing financial support and we used the proceeds from the race to invest heavily in the technology plank of our school’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, initiative,” LeDoyen said.  “We purchased iPad cases and a mobile computer cart and we also registered our core STEM team to participate in a conference on teaching the initiative to our students.”

After the race, sponsors will offer complimentary refreshments, including fruit, bagels and water, followed by the award presentation for participants at 9 a.m.

Participants can purchase advanced non-refundable tickets for $20 through the school’s PTA members or at the registration table the morning of the event.

Parents, teachers, administration, neighbors, friends and children of all ages are welcome, including those in strollers, but bikes, scooters and pets are not allowed for safety and allergy-related reasons.
