In a news release Thursday, the Internal Revenue Service announced refunds totaling nearly $760 million may be waiting for an estimated 918,600 taxpayers in the U.S. who did not file a federal income tax return for 2010. In Georgia, more than $28 million in unclaimed refunds awaits nearly 23,000 residents.
But to collect the money, a return for 2010 must be filed with the IRS by April 15. The law requires the return be properly addressed, mailed and postmarked by that date. There is no penalty for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.
The IRS estimates the average unclaimed refund for 2010 in Georgia is $539.
