UPDATED WITH QUOTE: The Henry County Board of Commissioners appointed James “Jim” Walker to the position of county manager, to begin serving Monday. The action came during a called meeting March 25, after commissioners reconvened from executive session.

In a special called meeting last week, the Henry County Board of Commissioners appointed Jim Walker to the position of county manager.

“The board started in its quest to find a county manager approximately five months ago,” said Commissioner Bruce Holmes.

He said the board worked closely with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia to handle the application process.

About 50 applications were submitted from through the country.

“All submitted applications were sorted by tiers, with tier one being the most qualified candidates,” Holmes said. “The board decided to interview all Tier One applicants.”

The three candidates that were under consideration after narrowing down the applicants were Walker along with North Miami Beach, Fla., City Manager Lyndon Bonner and interim Henry County Manager Michael Harris.

Walker, who is from Orange Beach, Ala., earned a bachelor of business administration from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.

He has 16 years of experience in government.

Walker most recently served as a state liaison for the Gulf Coast Claims Facility for Alabama and Mississippi in the aftermath of the 2010 BP Gulf Coast oil spill.

He also served for several years as Alabama homeland security director.

Walker served in the U.S. Army from 1981 to 2002 where he was an infantry lieutenant colonel and Airborne Ranger.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Harris was taking the position of city administrator with the city of Stockbridge.

Harris has been serving as interim county manager since August 2013, when former county manager, Fred Auletta, shifted to the role of Henry County’s finance director.

Walker officially began his position on Monday.

The motion to elect Walker was passed 4-0 after the board returned from executive session.

Chairman Tommy Smith was not present for the vote because he was out sick.
