Druid Hills senior Heather Mase is making the most of what is most likely her final season of soccer.

Even though Mase has the skills to compete on the next level, the forward plans to just focus on academics in college and will attend Davidson.

“It’s been hard to choose between academics and sports,” said Mase, who has a 4.0 GPA. “But I’m going to Davidson because it’s a stronger school academically. Also my sister goes there and every time I visited I really liked it.”

Before Monday's contest against Meadowcreek, Mase had 21 goals and was atop the standings among scorers in DeKalb county.

“I’ve had a lot of girls who have scored goals but it’s really kind of special when you have somebody who is that true striker, that true goal scorer,” Druid Hills girls’ coach Trey Palmer said. “Not someone who just got lucky but someone who has a real nose for wanting to make turns, make runs and knows where to go and that is Heather.”

“As an offensive player, I think I have improved with shooting, beating people one on one and thinking,” Mase said. “Not just trying to play but thinking while I’m playing and working with others, looking for passes and through balls.”

The Lady Red Devils next contest is Thursday against Decatur.

“Hopefully, Heather keeps scoring goals and we will keep moving forward,” Palmer said.
