Before his senior season began, Dutchtown catcher Daniel Vargas decided he wanted to be respected not just behind the plate but while at the plate.

That hope is now a reality since Vargas is batting .400 with seven RBI, according to

“I’ve been working hard this offseason on hitting a lot,” Vargas said. “Defense has been my game for a long time so I had to work on hitting this offseason.”

Vargas said he and junior Sam Glickman would be in the batting cage before school and after school.

As far as catching, Vargas had a 1.8 POP time and four pickoffs before last Monday’s game against Woodland.

“There is nothing like catching,” Vargas said. “You call the shots. You get the signs from the coaches and direct all traffic in the infield. You got to be the leader on the field.”

“To have Daniel Vargas as a catcher is a gift,” Dutchtown coach Kelcey White said. “I’ve had some catchers in my 14-15 years of coaching and I would put him as one of the best that I ever had. He is a very solid receiver and has a plus-plus arm and a solid bat.”

After this season, Vargas plans to continue playing at junior college, while majoring in education and then go on to a higher level of competition.
