Drew Young drove in a run in Locust Grove’s 4-2 victory against Stockbridge on Monday.
After an error-filled second inning that could have added to Locust Grove’s two-run deficit, coach Stephen Phillips had a meeting with the entire team outside of the dugout.

“I told them we had to go and get this one,” Phillips said. “It wasn’t going to be a game that would be handed to us. If they really wanted it and wanted to continue to be in the top part of the region, then they would have to go out and get it. Have to scratch and claw. Whatever we had to do and we did that.”

The Wildcats immediately responded in the top of the third when Trey King induced a walk and moved all the way to third before Josh Fellows drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center for a 2-1 score.

Locust Grove would go on to score three more runs the rest of the way and defeat Stockbridge for the sixth straight time with a 4-2 comeback victory on the road Monday.

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats drew even at 2-2 after Cortez McDowell singled, stole second and scored due to a throwing error. Later in the frame, Drew Young gave Locust Grove the lead for good with a single to plate Fellows.

In the seventh, the Wildcats added to their margin when McDowell reached on an infield single, stole second and came home thanks to a single to right by Fellows.

“It’s nice to have McDowell on the base path,” Phillips said. “Most of them can call when he is going to steal and they still can’t throw him out. When he is on the base path, there are a lot of things that we can do to make defenses think and make them move.”

In the seventh, the Tigers had the tying run on first but Shean Kennedy lined into a game-ending double play.
