With only five region games left on the schedule and needing some help in the standings, Stockbridge’s playoff hopes suffered a major blow after a 9-1 loss to Upson-Lee at home Wednesday.

Before the first pitch was thrown, the Tigers (8-13 overall, 7-9 Region 4-AAAA) had a chance to even up their region record, sweep the Knights and move closer to Woodland, which sits in the No. 4 spot, but they couldn’t get things going offensively against Kalen Puckett and had their two-game win streak stopped.

Theron Freeman scored the lone run due to a wild pitch but Stockbridge stranded 10 runners. Nate Greene struck out five batters but walked just as many.

The trouble started in the third inning for the Tigers when Upson-Lee put four runs on the board. First, Elijah Hill scored on a fielder’s choice then Matt Crews made it 2-0 with a single to left to plate Puckett.

Two batters later, Zack Gooden singled to center to bring home Kyle Kelly and Crews for a 4-0 advantage.

After the Tigers reduced their deficit to four in the fifth, the Knights (10-9, 7-6) essentially put the game away in the seventh, adding four more runs to their lead.

Upson-Lee scored three runs as a result of two errors and Puckett had an RBI single to center. Stockbridge was retired in order in the bottom of the frame.

The Tigers host Dutchtown, which has won the last three meetings including a 10-0 decision this season, on Monday.
