Samantha Russell played a big role for Mount Pisgah Christian in its drive to the Class A state championship in both 2011 and ’12.

The senior hopes to help lead the Patriots to a third state title this year as she returns to the lineup after taking off her junior season last year to concentrate on junior tennis.

Russell has picked where she left off with an 8-1 record at No. 2 singles to help lead Pisgah to a 7-4 overall record and keep the Patriots among the elite in Class A.

She has been nothing short of dominant in her high school career at Mount Pisgah with a 44-2 career record.

“She came to the school as a freshman and immediately jumped right in and was an undefeated freshman player on the first state championship that the school has ever won,” Mount Pisgah Christian coach Ken Bomar said. “She has immediately fit back in with all the other team members. She’s the sort of player who sets the example for the young people on the team and we do have a lot of young people on the team this year. We needed some senior leadership and she’s really provided that.”

Russell, who is ranked 20th in the state in the USTA Girls 18 tennis rankings, has signed to play college tennis with Wofford.
