In a news release Friday, the Sandy Springs Police and Fire departments announced they responded to a report that two people had fallen into the Chattahoochee River while canoeing Friday afternoon.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Sandy Springs Swift Water Rescue Team each put boats in the water to search for the pair. Both men, father and son, came ashore near Habersham Waters Drive, which runs off Spalding Drive. There, a family friend as well as public safety personnel assisted them from the water.

They were treated at the scene by EMS personnel and later transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure against hypothermia. Both will recover fully. The cause of the mishap is still under investigation. The father and son were not identified as of Friday and Sgt. Ron Momon, a police department spokesman, had left the office for the day when asked via email for their names.
