Two Douglas County residents were among a group of award-winning volunteers the American Red Cross is honoring later this month.

The disaster aid agency’s metro Atlanta chapter named Shirley Rawlins winner of its Nursing Achievement Award, and Susan Terzith winner of its Biomedical Achievement Award.

The awards were announced to coincide with National Volunteer Week April 6 to 12. The agency will honor its outstanding volunteers and community partners for fiscal year 2014 at an event on the campus of Georgia Tech April 24.

Those selected for local recognition were nominated in eight categories for outstanding contributions to the Red Cross mission by their volunteer peers.

They are among a group of 19 to be recognized as part of the chapter’s 100-day centennial celebration in metro Atlanta.

“I have come to truly appreciate the power of the Red Cross mission, primarily the strength of volunteers and the generosity of donors,” said Kevin Keough, chairman of the chapter’s historically all-volunteer board.

“The Red Cross serves people in the greatest times of need and it does so consistently and reliably, thanks to wonderful people like this year’s award recipients.”

Tim Hayes of Conyers will receive the Volunteer Leadership Award, which is the highest recognition the Red Cross bestows on volunteers at the local level.

More than 90 percent of the Red Cross workforce is composed of volunteers, including more than 1,700 of them in metro Atlanta.
