Thursday’s episode of A&E’s “Beyond Scared Straight,” scheduled for 10 p.m., will feature Fulton County.

According to a news release, Fulton Sheriff Ted Jackson is proud of this episode because it proved effective in making the young participants consider their unbecoming behavior.

Jackson said he thinks parents should watch the episode with their children who may need to see what jail is really like as a deterrent against bad behavior.

A&E will showcase the FCSO Youth Intervention Program, a one-day event that begins with parents bringing their children to the Fulton County Courthouse for a meeting with Jackson to discuss their children’s behavior. Parents are offered the opportunity to meet with a counselor to continue the conversation.

The students break away to visit with Fulton County Superior Court Judge Shawn LaGrua. LaGrua has a heart-to-heart talk with them about the consequences of their actions. She is often joined by a prosecutor and a public defender. The students tour the courtroom and see the detention areas. This is a prelude to their ride to the Fulton County Jail.

The jail tour begins in intake, where the booking process commences. Students dress out in jail jumpsuits and are offered an inmate lunch. The day continues with a ride on the elevator to the seventh floor of the jail to maximum security where males are housed. The girls meet female inmates in intake and may visit the South Jail Annex in Union City where all female inmates are housed long term. Both males and females meet again in the Alternative Lifestyle Zone. In all settings, the inmates tell moving stories of life behind bars and how the mistakes they made landed them on the wrong side of the law. Sometimes, the students know someone who is or has been to jail. Seeing the jail in real life is an unforgettable experience.
