The classes — Fusion, Strength 45, Strength 60, Core and Strike — will be offered in addition to the traditional Jazzercise classes, which are 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training in routines choreographed to music, said Alice Lumsden, the center’s owner.
She said Fusion is a circuit-based interval class where participants’ switch back and forth from cardio to strength training. Strength 45 and Strength 60 are 45-minute and 60-minute classes, respectively, that use strength training for major muscle fatigue. Core is a cardio workout with an emphasis on toning the abdominals. Strike is a kickboxing and jabbing class that builds lean muscle mass and relieves stress.
Lumsden said the new classes were implemented a couple months ago through the entire Jazzercise corporate chain.
“We have gotten a lot of really great, positive feedback,” she said. “It’s exciting to mix it up a little bit. The muscle confusion and cross training is so important.”
Going into National Fitness Month, Lumsden said she wants north Fulton residents to know the offerings at her Jazzercise center are highly effective total body workouts.
“[Customers] can expect weight loss, core strength and cardiovascular endurance,” she said. “[Jazzercise is] a great stress release and also it’s a mood-boosting endorphin rush.”
Lumsden has been teaching Jazzercise for 32 years and more than five years ago opened the Alpharetta location on Old Alabama Road Connector, which is designated a premier center by Jazzercise corporate. She started teaching right out of college when she discovered sitting at a desk in an office all day just wasn’t going to cut it for her. Now as a long-time instructor, Lumsden said she sees how Jazzercise transforms people’s lives.
“I started seeing that people would come to Jazzercise after a long day of work or after a death in the family or finding out some devastating news and Jazzercise was like their safe haven,” she said.
“They knew they could come there, they could work out, and it was going to be a happy environment. Over the years, I have been amazed at how many people have stuck with the program.”
Some of her customers have been doing Jazzercise for as long as she has and she said she has seen countless friendships form between classmates over the years.
