The event, which will be in the Vista Grove Shopping Center parking area from 1 to 8 p.m., is in its second year and co-chair Carolann Reiter said attendees can expect a wide array of fun activities and tasty treats.
“We put a strong emphasis on local music, artists and businesses for the festival,” she said. “There will be a stage set up for musicians who will play during the entire event and most of them have a connection to this area, whether they live here or play at our restaurants on a regular basis.”
The stage will feature an eclectic mix of music including a church choir, blue grass band, funk band and a blues band with teenage performers.
Reiter said the purpose of the festival was to highlight the people who live and work in the north Decatur area.
“This is a completely volunteer-based event but we’ve partnered up with many local business owners to really showcase what our community has to offer,” she said.
Sponsors, like Oak Grove United Methodist Church, will provide assistance such as free parking and shuttles back and forth from the festival area.
The event is also sponsored by Discover DeKalb, a branch of the county’s development authority and endorsed by District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader.
Reiter said local sponsorships and community pride made last year’s festival a success — even with less than ideal weather.
“Last year’s festival was nothing like we expected because we advertised that it would occur rain or shine but then we had to postpone it due to really dangerous storms,” she said.
“Two weeks later we almost got rained out again, but even after delaying the activities for a few hours, we still had about 1,000 people show up. Everyone was so excited about the festival and wanted one for this area that they still turned out and we ended up turning a bad situation into good situation.”
Any proceeds from the event will go towards local, community-based projects such as the building and maintaining of Frazer-Rowe Park, adjacent to the shopping center.
