Paulding track girls move to state meet

Paulding County track and field athletes had strong representation at the statewide level as they competed at the Class 5A Sectional meet hosted by Starr’s Mill High School in Fayetteville April 26.

In field events, Hiram’s Breondra Stelle won the girls’ high jump competition while Qua Stocks of North Paulding placed second in the boys’ event. Connor Christian won the boys’ shot put event for East Paulding while North Paulding athletes Seth Whitener and Cooper Corley placed in the event’s top 10. Whitener also earned fifth in the discus throw.

Erika Earwood of South Paulding finished fifth in the girls’ shot put and North Paulding’s Oliver Eliezer was ninth in the boys’ triple jump. Bradley Graham finishing seventh in the boys’ pole vault for the Wolfpack.

Three athletes, Jinni Pethel of Hiram, East Paulding’s Allyssa Sheffield and Lexi Geiger of Paulding County High School all placed in the top 12 in the girls’ 1600-meter run. North Paulding’s Natalie Coolidge earned seventh in the girls’ 3200-meter run. Hiram’s Eli Saucier finished fourth in the boys’ 400-meter dash while Kahliyah Smith of South Paulding earned fifth in the girls’ 100-meter dash.

Senior Aaron Jones continued his strong season for South Paulding, placing fifth in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events and fourth as part of the 4x400 meter relay team which also included Maurice Swain, Josh Addison, Timothy Smalls, Josh Hill and Michael Goines.

The Spartans also had strong marks in the girls’ sprint events as Tionna Fant placed eighth in the 400-meter dash and 10th in the 200-meter event while Jazmine Burse earned sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Hiram’s Pethel and Stelle, North Paulding’s Coolidge and South Paulding’s Burse, Earwood, Fant and Smith qualified in their respective events for the girls’ state meet in Albany starting Thursday. The qualifiers for the boys’ state meet, which starts May 8 in Jefferson, had not been determined earlier this week.
