Lately, opponents may have been beating Stephenson collectively but not at the No. 1 singles’ position because sophomore Ashia Jones has been perfect so far.

“Other schools are looking out for her and they know they can’t beat her,” Stephenson tennis coach Eric Mau said. “She has a real good shot of going all four years of winning all of her games. She has already done the first two which are the hardest.”

After going undefeated as a freshman, Jones finished 13-0 this past season despite Stephenson’s sub-.500 record.

“Against Dunwoody, it was a really tough match,” Jones said. “We were going back and forth, breaking each other’s serve. It was a really interesting match. I just had to calm down and get help from my coaches.”

“Ashia is phenomenal,” Mau said. “She works hard and has the physical quickness and mental toughness. She knows what it takes to beat an opponent. She will wear you down. It has been several times when I’ve seen her paint both lines and the opponent is just like ‘what do I gotta do?”’

Jones is a fan of Serena Williams and both of her parents played tennis.
