In DeKalb County, sixteen graduating seniors were recently recognized as receiving the Gates Millennium Scholarship.

The 2014 DeKalb scholars are:
-Arabia Mountain HS — Njeri Bennett, Amera Dixon, David Shoneye and Juwan Thompson
-Chamblee HS — Yusra Ahmedin
-Clarkston HS — Muhozi Aimable, Tluang Cer and Kim An Ta
-Cross Keys HS — Chao Lin
-Dunwoody HS — Ashton Jordan
-Lithonia HS — David Smith
-McNair HS — Deona Clayton
-Stone Mountain HS — Vy Huynh, Ekue Kagni and Thi Thong
-Southwest DeKalb HS — Peri Green

Each of the students will be awarded a good-through-graduation scholarship that can be used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of his or her choice. Nationwide, a total of 1,000 students were selected representing 44 states, the District of Columbia and four U. S. territories.

“These worthy students were chosen because of their strong leadership skills, commitment to community service and overall academic achievement,” said Superintendent Michael Thurmond. “These awards are both recognition of achievement and an investment in the futures of our children.”

Established in 1999 with the goal of developing leaders for America’s future, the scholarship program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It is one of the flagship scholarship programs of the United Negro College Fund.
