The Chapel Hill baseball team won its first-round series in the Georgia High School Association Class 3A state playoffs by earning two home victories over Peach County on May 2. The Panthers won both contests 7-0 and 6-2 with senior MJ Rookard starting in centerfield in each game. He came in as a relief pitcher during the second game to secure the victory for Chapel Hill.

“It was a great win for us especially being in the playoffs with a young team,” Rookard said. “We knew the competition we were up against and adjusted well to the pitching of Peach County we hadn’t seen all year.”

The Panthers dropped their next series in the second round against Pierce County two games to one on May 7 and 8. They finished the season with 22 wins and a second-place finish in Region 4-AAA.

“We had a great season and a lot of the young players stepped up which will help them next season,” Rookard said.

While at Chapel Hill, Rookard was a member of the Key Club, Bass Pro Club, yearbook staff along with playing on the football team. During his junior season on the diamond, he set the school’s stolen base record and helped lead the Panthers to 26 wins, a region championship and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

Rookard will matriculate to Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, Ala., to play baseball.
