Last week, Marist junior goalkeeper Carlin Zaprowski was named Class AAAA player of the year.

“I didn’t expect it at all,” Zaprowski said. “I feel like our defense is so good and our team is so good that sometimes as a goalkeeper I don’t get as much action so I wasn’t expecting to be spotlighted.”

In 21 starts this season, Zaprowski has earned 17 shutouts and allowed a total of four goals.

“We communicate well and stay organized,” Zaprowski said. “But when our opponents get opportunities we shut them down pretty quickly.”

Last Saturday, Zaprowski recorded her seventh consecutive shutout when the Lady War Eagles defeated Wayne County 10-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Today, Marist will host Alexander in the semifinals and try to move one step closer to a second straight state title in coach Sergio Stadler’s final season.

“I really want to win for him,” Zaprowski said. “I think it would be really cool because he’s been here forever. He taught my dad. He’s like a legend here. It would be really cool if he went out with a win.”

Stadler was also named coach of the year.

As far as Zaprowski, she is unsure about playing soccer in college but does own a 4.31 grade-point average and an interest in attending Georgia Tech, Harvard or Duke.
