For the past two years, the final results of the Class AAAAA GHSA Girls’ State Track Championships listed Dunwoody senior Alex Cameron as first in the 1600, and such was the same this season when Cameron crossed the finish line first — for the last time — earlier this month.

“I’ve been a runner for a long time and I’ve always loved running so when I got into running I never ever anticipated this kind of success,” Cameron said. “But being able to say I’ve been state champion as sophomore, junior and senior in the same race, it’s very surreal.”

By capturing her third straight gold medal in the event, Cameron also became the first female distance runner from her school to do so.

“The fact that this is the last 1600 I’m running in high school added a little pressure because I wanted to make it a good one,” Cameron said. “I really wanted to end my career with a bang.”

But the competition didn’t end in Albany because Cameron will join the cross country and track teams at Miami University(Ohio).

“I felt like I would fit in the most on the team in Miami,” Cameron said. “I really liked the girls on the team and the coach’s ideas about running.”

Cameron, who will graduate with a 3.9 grade-point average, is leaning towards majoring in marketing.
