Sophomore Haley Worthy has completed a stellar season for the Alexander girls’ soccer team, helping the Cougars win a program-record 13 matches and advance to the semifinals of the state playoffs for the first-time ever. The central midfielder scored the game-winner for Alexander in its 1-0 second-round win over Lanier on May 7.

“That was a tight game and we had a lot of scoring opportunities but couldn’t finish,” Worthy said. “Claire [Lynch] made a perfect corner kick and I headed it in. It’s my job to finish those.”

Worthy followed it up with another goal against Locust Grove in Alexander’s 2-0 quarterfinals victory on May 10.

Alexander’s season concluded against Marist on May 14 but doesn’t diminish the accomplishments of the team according to Worthy.

“This was the best team I’ve ever been a part of because everyone worked hard and were successful together,” she noted. “I played with several of my teammates at Fairplay Middle School and that helped me transition into the varsity team.”

Worthy plays club soccer for the YMCA Strikers Elite based in Austell and a member of several organizations at Alexander including the Key Club, Beta Club and the National Honor Society. She is recovering from offseason hip surgery and will return to competitive soccer in September.

Worthy will pursue a career in physical therapy upon entering college.
