Sometimes the margin between first and second place is very small in track and field. Tucker sophomore Kiera Washington landed on the good side of this experience at the GHSA Girls’ State Track Championships. In the Class AAAAA 800-meter race, Washington edged Kell’s Marielle Lewis for first place.

“It was fun and exciting to find out I only won by four milliseconds,” Washington said. “I was really happy.”

Washington’s time was 2:19.90 and Lewis’ was 2:19.94.

“Kiera is one of the hardest workers I’ve had since a girl named Kim Miller back in 2010 who was on the state championship team,” track coach Todrick Malone said.

“Kiera has paved the way with these girls,” Malone said. “I tell them all the time if we have people working like her we will be successful every year. She has a great attitude. She always does things exactly how I want them done.”

Also at the state finals, Washington broke the school record again with a time of 2:17.07 in the preliminaries.

“At the beginning of meets, I’m a little goofy, trying to get the nerves out,” Washington said. “But when it gets close to my race, I get serious and focused and I just tune everybody out.” This summer, Washington will continue competing with the Sapphire-Ruff Riders track team and strive to reduce her times in the 400 and 800.
